Hospital admissions can be anxiety provoking and scary, most of the time they are unplanned and so we don’t have time to prepare. Whether it is a planned admission or through A&E, I have created a checklist of essential items that you may want to bring or to give someone to collect on your behalf.
Health;
o Medications with your repeat prescription slip
o Glasses/contact lenses/hearing aids
o Mobility aids
o List of allergies
o Document of pre-existing health conditions
Entertainment;
o Books
o Notebook and pen
o Arts and crafts
o Phone/tablet/iPad/laptop with chargers
o Headphones
o Extention lead (there’s limited plugs!)
Clothes;
o Comfy clothes, pyjamas, jumpers, slippers
o Socks & underwear
o Eye mask & ear plugs
Toiletries;
o Hairbrush & hairbands
o Toothbrush & toothpaste
o Face wash
o Body wash/lotion
o Shampoo & conditioner
o Deodorant
o Skincare
Other;
o Blankets (hospital blankets are very thin)
o Pillow
o Comforter/teddies
o Water bottle
o Snacks
My best advice is to have open communication with the medical staff in regards to your care, keep a daily routine if possible (for example have a shower, get dressed, get out of the ward if allowed), keep your mind busy with arts/crafts, watching films/tv, reading and don’t be afraid to ask for help from friends/family!
